What Is a Guru?
The word Guru comes from Sanskrit, where Gu means darkness and Ru means the remover of darkness. A Guru is someone who leads us from ignorance to knowledge and helps us grow spiritually, emotionally or intellectually.
A Guru isn't only a spiritual teacher. It can also be a parent, grandparent, school teacher, mentor or anyone whose guidance has positively influenced your life.
Why Do We Celebrate Guru Purnima?
Guru Purnima falls on the full moon (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha and is traditionally observed in honour of Maharishi Veda Vyasa, the revered sage who compiled the Vedas and authored the Mahabharata. Because of his extraordinary contribution to Hindu scriptures, the day is also known as Vyasa Purnima.
It is a time to reflect on the importance of knowledge, wisdom and lifelong learning.
